I went to see The Book of Eli last night with a couple of friends and really enioyed the film.

It felt abit like Fallout 3 mixed with Deadwood with humanity attempting to rebuild itself after a terrible war. Not much back-story is really revealed except that everybody started burning bibles afterwards so you can probably guess what the catalyst was.

The film follows the travels of a man named Eli (Dezsel Washington) who believes he is on a mission from God to escort the last remaining Bible to the West Coast of the United States. It seems that the Bible has become a sought after item by a man named Carnegie (Gary Oldman) who wants to use the word of God to control those he has power over and thus gain more power for himself.

Although Religion is blamed for the War which got the world into such a terrible mess, the film also basically says that without faith the human race doesn’t really have anything going for it, no aspiration, no value and no consequence. One could even say that Eli is the personification of faith itself for reasons which I’m not going to disclose (don’t want to spoil too much).

If I was unsure about my personal views on Religion then The Book of Eli certainly didn’t make me swing more one way or another. Rather the film says that religion is something that can be used for good and for harm and also says that it could be something real or something which is all in our heads.

The film didn’t make me come out of the cinema exclaiming how awesome of a film it was. Instead both me and my friends walked to the car in silence pondering the film’s themes which left much more of an impression on us than alot of films that we’ve watched lately. If this was the film’s objective then I would like to congratulate Denzel Washington, Gary Oldman and and the Hughes brothers (Directors) for asking some serious questions during a time when alot of us are questioning if Religion is something we could do without.

Oh, I should also mention that Mila Kunis is in this film and actually does a really good job. It was a nice suprise after seeing her in Max Payne.

Go watch it.
